AI-Generated Dubs

Amazon has taken down the dubbed audio of several animated TV shows on their platform that were generated through artificial intelligence. The initial decision to release AI dubs for beloved shows like “Banana Fish” and “Vineland Saga” created an immediate backlash of controversy, not only among the shows’ many fans but also with members of the animation industry. Many voice actors spoke out, such as veteran Damian Mills, who wrote on Twitter “Shame on you Amazon. After years of fans hoping for an English dub of ‘Banana Fish,’ you give it to us as AI generated garbage? … Fix this, or I personally will not work with you as an actor EVER AGAIN on any of your dubs.”

Other actors voiced similar boycott threats if the audio was not taken down. It took a week for Amazon to get the message, removing the English dub option from the website. The move was met with approval from the initial critics, though many were wary about further attempts to replace actors with AI in the future. Although, given the laughably poor quality of the audio, such a scenario is probably a way off.  As of the time of this writing, the Spanish dub of “Banana Fish” has not been taken down.
