Venezuela Blockade

In a further escalation of the ongoing tensions with Venezuela, President Trump has ordered a “blockade” of the South American nation. Specifically, the move would target oil tankers under sanctions by the US. Large amounts of troops and vessels have been moved near Venezuela in recent months, including an aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford. Trump cited as justification for the inflammatory action an unspecified “theft of assets,” and accused the Venezuelan government of terrorism, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. The Trump administration has already designated President Nicolás Maduro and members of his government as members of a terrorist organization, the so-called “Cartel de los Soles.” The US military has been carrying out targeted strikes on boats in the Caribbean it suspects to be involved in transporting drugs, resulting in at least 90 fatalities.

Internationally, crude oil prices rose due to uncertainty about how Venezuela’s oil exports may be impacted by the Trump administration. Losing all or much of their oil export capability would be devastating for the country, as oil makes up a massive portion of its economy (approximately 90% of exports). A cutoff of all or most of Venezuelan crude for an extended period would very likely drive up global oil prices substantially. Still, it remains unclear how serious the threat of full blockade would be. Trump may be using the threat of conflict to pressure the Maduro regime to make concessions. The President has been known to throw out ideas on social media, only to later change course. Regardless, Maduro has lashed back, accusing the United States of imperialism and appealing to close allies like Russia for support. Only time will tell if this ongoing antagonistic saga with Venezuela will come to a peaceful or violent resolution.

VGA's 2025

The twelfth annual Video Game Awards was streamed through multiple platforms on Friday. The biggest event in gaming each year, this show was the most expensive one to date: light shows, acrobatics, orchestral performances, celebrities, the Muppets, and more. To the surprise of very few, French breakout indie game darling Claire Obscure: Expedition 33 swept the awards. The game was nominated for a record-breaking nine awards, winning all but one of them, including game of the year. While some viewers were disappointed that other popular games did not receive any awards, it was hard to deny the validity of E33’s worthiness in each category.

There were also important game announcements and trailers. Belgium’s Larian Studios, makers of the acclaimed Balder’s Gate 3 showed off a new project. More exclusive titles were announced for the Nintendo Switch and Xbox. There was also a new trailer for the much-anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, scheduled for release sometime in 2027. Finally, there was the last reveal for a game that had aroused much speculation, due largely to the large statue erected in the desert that served as the promotion for the unknown project. It was revealed to be for a new game called Highguard, a first-person shooting game with a similar aesthetic to Overwatch. It was somewhat of an anticlimax and disappointment for many viewers, but the overall show was by most accounts a resounding success. The numbers have yet to be released, but last year’s show eclipsed the Superbowl by many millions of live viewers. It’s likely that this year has surpassed that by millions more. The surprising size of these streams shows how gaming, far from the niche it was once considered, has grown into a massive global phenomenon. Now it seems to have an online presence to match that audience.

AI-Generated Dubs

Amazon has taken down the dubbed audio of several animated TV shows on their platform that were generated through artificial intelligence. The initial decision to release AI dubs for beloved shows like “Banana Fish” and “Vineland Saga” created an immediate backlash of controversy, not only among the shows’ many fans but also with members of the animation industry. Many voice actors spoke out, such as veteran Damian Mills, who wrote on Twitter “Shame on you Amazon. After years of fans hoping for an English dub of ‘Banana Fish,’ you give it to us as AI generated garbage? … Fix this, or I personally will not work with you as an actor EVER AGAIN on any of your dubs.”

Other actors voiced similar boycott threats if the audio was not taken down. It took a week for Amazon to get the message, removing the English dub option from the website. The move was met with approval from the initial critics, though many were wary about further attempts to replace actors with AI in the future. Although, given the laughably poor quality of the audio, such a scenario is probably a way off.  As of the time of this writing, the Spanish dub of “Banana Fish” has not been taken down.

Honduras Election 2025

There is still major tension and frustration in Honduras as the vote counting process for the recent presidential election drags on. The candidate Salvador Nasralla has taken a slim lead of less than 10,000 votes over his main rival Nasry Asfuera. Still, less than 70 percent of the vote has been counted since the election on November 30th. US President Donald Trump has been vocal about the election, throwing his support behind the conservative leaning Asfuera, the former mayor of the capital city of Tegucigalpa. The US leader has not been happy with the delay or current polling, spreading familiar accusations of voter fraud and even threatening to potentially withhold aid to the country should the outcome be unfavorable to his favorite. This has naturally garnered some criticism from Honduran citizens, who are weary of any renewal of the historic American interference in the region.

Trump has also made the decision to pardon former President Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was serving a 45-year jail sentence for drug-trafficking and weapons charges in Virginia. Hernandez was convicted of accepting bribes by drug cartels to fund his political ambitions in exchange for allowing the gangs to move more than 400 tons of cocaine into the US. During Hernandez’s time in office there was a spike in crime and gang activity within the country. Trump claimed that the pardon was a correction of the Biden administration’s excessive use of prosecution. All of this occurs at a time when the US has been conducting bombings on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean, as well as labeling Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro a terrorist and a drug trafficker. Much of what will matter in the future of Honduran foreign politics is incumbent on the outcome of an election that officials are scrambling to determine.
